Hi, I’m Nikki and this is a new type of post that I’m hoping to bring to you each week! It’s also my first post for the GamesQuest blog!
With Kickstarter having such a huge impact on table-top gaming these days, it would seem a little strange not to bring you news of Kickstarter campaigns that catch our eye. So, going forward, once a week, we’ll be posting a list of the five Kickstarter campaigns that interest us the most. We’re not going to be endorsing any of them, we’re just going to be putting it out there, that they caught our attention and that you might find them interesting. So, for the first ever “Kickstarter Update” post, we have a selection of very interesting titles that you can take a look at and judge for yourself. Of course, if you do like what you see, then please come back and comment on this post to let me know your thoughts.
Steampunk meets magical combat…A Clockwork Kickstarter!!!
First up we have Clockwork Wars, a fantasy-steampunk war game by the Kickstarter team that brought us Francis Drake and the Through the Ages 3rd Edition – Eagle Games.
In Clockwork Wars, 2-4 players take control of unique races, during a tense war set in an alternate universe. Each of the four races have different characteristics that will no doubt, affect the gameplay in different ways. Your ultimate goal is to vanquish your foes and accumulate the most victory points during seven game rounds. You earn points when you fight for control of territories containing valuable resources; develop cities and invest in research that help you conquer your enemies and win the game.
European Union backers will be getting a decent deal, because the game and all of the stretch goals will be ship from within the EU, which means no hefty customs charges! With 29 days left on the campaign, there’s plenty of time to back this one! The project started with a target of $25,000 and they’ve achieved more than double this goal already. The first three stretch goals have been met already and at this rate, I anticipate that backers will get some nice pieces of artwork and quality, upgraded, game components. Check out the campaign here.
In Search of Lost Lands… Kickstarter Expands 8 Minutes!!!
Next, we have Eight-Minute Empire: Lost Lands, an expansion for Ryan Laukat’s excellent Eight Minute Empire: Legends.
This expansion provides more variety and depth in the form of a new “Lost” card faction with unique powers, new leaders, components to expand the game to 5 players, a new board with a double sized island and player boards.
Lost Lands promises to speed up the already quick gameplay of the base-game by making players draft their cards. For those that already love Eight Minute Empire: Legends, this sounds like it’s going to be a great addition to the rules and makes this one to watch out for!
With 20 days left before the end of the campaign, they’ve already nearly doubled the target of $15,000 and they’re offering some great stretch goals, including the components to add a 6th player. It’s likely they’ll reach these quite easily, so backers are going to get some additional goodies included in their set. Check out the campaign over at Kickstarter for more information on this one here.
The Names Smersh… Kickstarter Smersh!!!
Our third campaign of note is the Agents of Smersh 2nd Edition – The Ultimate Collection by Jason Maxwell and 8th Summit games. Jason has been busily reworking his extremely popular spy game Agents of Smersh. Owners of the first edition can rest assured that they do not need to replace their copy with this one. Well, unless they’re a total completionist of course! The new edition provides an edited version of the book and cards which, if you did want to upgrade, will be made available separately at a later date.
However, out of the box, the revised edition includes:
- 14 characters
- 6 henchmen cards
- A Dr Lobo bust
- Secret mission deck
- Etched dice
- 2 books of encounters
- ‘The Director is Watching’ Gencon promo
- Swagman’s Hope expansion with new board
- Custom print poker chips
- The Shadow henchman
- The Gambler henchman
- Space station scenario with tokens
- New scenario booklet
Once again, buyers within the EU are able to avoid hefty customs charges as this game also ships from an EU friendly location. Unfortunately for Canadian buyers though, they run the risk of having to pay customs, because the new service provider cannot guarantee that shipments will be made within Canada. With 27 days to go, this is another Kickstarter success having already beaten the $20,000 target by nearly $15,000. Check it out if you’re a fan of the first edition, or want to get your teeth into a secret agent story-telling adventure game!
Resistance is Hostile… With a Double Dose of Kickstarter!!!
This soon to end campaign is for not one, but two, expansions for the hit social deduction game The Resistance.
The Resistance – Hostile Intent & Hidden Agenda by Indie Boards and Cards, looks set to add a tonne more fun to a game that’s already considered by many, to be one of the most entertaining social games on the market. This is the company’s first Kickstarter campaign under their new Kickstarter alias, Indie Boards and Cards and so far it’s proved to be pretty successful. For those wondering what I’m talking about, the previous Indie Boards and Cards Kickstarter campaigns were all run through the alias Travis, after the owner of Indie Boards and Cards, Travis Worthington. Over the past couple of years Travis has used Kickstarter to bring some great titles to his backers, including Flash Point: Fire Rescue, The Resistance Avalon and Coup!
This campaign looks to offer more of the same good quality gaming, with this special edition expansion combing the two upcoming Resistance expansions and includes promo items, that won’t be available in the retail versions. In short, this special combo expansion massively increases the number of ways you can play this popular game. With just 3 days remaining of the campaign, Indie Boards and Cards have already met their target, nearly thirteen times over! Decide quickly if you’re interested in this one, because time is definitely tight!
Radiation Found in Board Game… Kickstarter Compounded Expansion!!!
Last but not least, we have an expansion for the popular chemistry board game, Compounded. Compounded: Geiger Expansion, by Dice Hate Me Games, is their ninth Kickstarter campaign. Given that they’ve already beaten their $30,000 goal with 26 days left to run, I think it’s fair to say that it’s already been a success.
With this expansion, all those experienced scientists out there get even more variables to consider in the lab. This is done through the introduction of radioactive elements and compounds that you can work with. However, budding scientists must keep a close eye on the Geiger counter – the more productive you are, the higher the chances of the radioactivity levels soaring to dangerous highs!!!
This expansion also introduces the concept of occasional player co-operation, in order to reduce radioactivity. However, for all those budding Dr Evil’s out there, there are now even more methods for you to create chaos in the lab!
Aside from the expansion, this campaign will also enable Dice Hate Me games to release the 2nd edition of the Compounded base game, which completely sold out earlier this year.
This is another EU friendly campaign, meaning postage won’t put fans off supporting the campaign and Dice Hate Me games will be looking to upgrade the components, providing a few cool stretch goals to thank their loyal supporters. Overall, it looks like a fun game and even comes with the Dice Tower seal of approval. Check it out on Kickstarter here.
The End is Nigh… But We’ll be Back!!!
Well, that’s the end of my little introduction to five Kickstarter campaigns currently peaking my interest. I hope that you’ve enjoyed your read and might even have decided to pledge for one or two of the games mentioned here. If you did decide to pull the trigger on any of them, please drop back here and let us know in the comments what you’ve backed and why! Until next week gamers, have fun gaming!
