It turns out that at some point in my life, just after I left University and started work as a technologist, it seems I became some kind of PC and console game recluse…
In my absence from video game society – I missed what has become an unbelievably popular game… Portal…
Released in 2007, Portal is a puzzle-based video game that has players teleporting themselves around a test-centre using an “Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device”.
Apparently, during the game you’re compelled to take part in these puzzles by an artificial intelligence (AI) called GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System). The strangest thing to me here is that this peculiar AI promises a cake-based reward when you finish all of the puzzles!?!
I have to admit, I had to do some reading-up on Portal. I’d heard of the game… I’d seen LOTS of people playing it… But since 2006 I’ve played very few video-games, instead, following a more analog board game path.
Portal teleports from screen to table!
A short while back I heard word that Portal would be making the transition from screen to table top. Today I received a note from Paul letting me know that it’s happening later this year! Yes, Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game is hitting a table near you in Q3 2015!
Paul also sent over some information about the game which I’ve included below for anyone who’s interested!
- Players: 2 – 4
- Ages: 15+
- 30 – 45 minutes
- Designed byValve staff, the makers of Portal & Portal 2!
- Includes a free Steam code for a copy of Portal 2!
- Fast and fun gameplay
- Modular board
- Includes miniatures of popular Portal game elements
- Pre-orders are being taken now!
Thinking of grabbing a copy?
I’m certainly interested in finding out how Portal plays and finding out whether such a well-known game can make a successful transition to the table-top. I guess only time will tell! But for now, take a look at the blurb for the game and check back in the coming months for more information on Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game!
Aperture Laboratories is looking for test subjects! Will you walk away with the delicious cake, or will it lead you to your doom?
Welcome Test Subjects, to the Aperture Laboratories test chambers. Inside your team will perform all sorts of important, dignified, and dangerous testing procedures… all in the pursuit of Cake! It’s a fun and funny fast-paced fight to the finish. And by finish, we mean your team probably died.
Beware, because the lab is an ever-changing conveyor belt of death and dismemberment. In this game based on the massively popular Portal video game series, players move and Portal their Test Subjects to various Chambers in the Lab in bouts of constantly shifting area control and card play. At the end of each player’s turn, one of the Chambers on the end of the Lab gives way plunging all Test Subjects in it into oblivion. Your departing Test Subjects may yet be rewarded with some wonderful parting gifts however, which may even include moist, industrial-grade slices of Aperture Cake. No lie!
