Another excellent piece of news has come out of Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) this weekend. With the massive success of their Star X-Wing Miniatures game range, it’s no surprise that the design geniuses over at FFG want to take their Star Wars miniatures universe to a whole new scale. Enter Star Wars Armada!!!
Star Wars Armada Miniatures… This is Star with a Capital Wars!!!
Star Wars Armada, the latest and greatest addition to a table-top Galaxy not so far, far away, looks pretty amazing and it’s set to have fans of the X-Wing miniatures range eager to jump in and control their favourite capital ships, such as the Star Destroyer!
You can read a tonne about the new game system over on the FFG web site, but here’s a brief description, straight from the horses mouth, of what to expect:
“…an epic two-player game of tactical fleet battles in the Star Wars universe. Massive Star Destroyers fly to battle against Rebel corvettes and frigates. Banks of turbolasers unleash torrential volleys of fire against squadrons of X-wing and TIEs. As Rebel and Imperial fleets collide, it is your job to issue the commands that will decide the course of battle and, ultimately, the fate of the galaxy.”
So much bigger… Yet a lot smaller!!!
Fans of the X-Wing Miniatures game have been getting some great, high quality, minis since 2012, and FFG recently released the rather epic Tantive IV and
Rebel Transport expansions. One of the things they’ve been trying their best to do is maintain a relatively realistic scale for the miniatures. For this reason, the X-Wing Miniatures version of Tantive IV measures in at about 42cm long! A true giant amongst miniatures, and leaving little chance of FFG producing a Star Destroyer, let alone a Death Star, at the appropriate scale for fears of giving the players a back injury… (Joke!)
As you can see from the image on the right (click to enlarge). Star Wars Armada uses a very different scale. Star Wars Armada’s version of the Tantive IV is clearly dwarfed by the much larger Star Destroyer, yet the game retains a sensible play size that you’ll still be able to move the minis without the need for a small crane! Scaling the miniatures down to this new level means we’ll be able to act out some truly epic battles, with X-wing and Tie-fighter squadrons engaging each other whilst massive Capital ships traverse the scene obliterating all in their path. This is going to be awesome!!!
Star Wars Armada is going to be a title to watch out for! Check back over the coming months for more news as we get it!
